Multiple Injured as Rough Air Impacts Delta Plane Landing at Sydney

Delta Airlines reported the aircraft went through "short-lived turbulence" as it landed at Sydney Airport.

Several people were hurt following a Delta Airlines flight originating in LA to Sydney, Australia experienced rough air on Friday morning.

The flight, numbered 41 "encountered brief turbulence" as it made its approach and landed at the Sydney airport, a representative for the carrier told. Four flight attendants required medical attention.

Emergency medical services reported they evaluated five patients, and took a trio to hospital with relatively minor issues that included back pain and head pain. Those affected ranged from their 30s up to the 70s.

This marks the latest incident of aircraft being hit by turbulence, with experts indicating that global warming is a major factor.

The aircraft was carrying 245 people and 15 crew members on the aircraft, the representative added, adding that the plane touched down "safely and normally" at the airport at 6:48 a.m. local time on the day in question.

The NSW Ambulance Service reported they were alerted just a mere three minutes prior to the plane arrived, and ambulances were ready and waiting at the airport.

Why plane turbulence is becoming increasingly prevalent - and more severe.

During the past year, 25 people were injured when a Delta Airlines flight, on a route from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, Netherlands, hit "considerable" atmospheric disturbance just two hours into the long-haul flight, and was forced to make an unscheduled landing.

Earlier this year, those on board on a Singapore Airlines flight experienced a terrifying five seconds period of extreme instability. An individual lost their life and numerous people sustained injuries, as those without seatbelts were thrown from their seats and fell back down.

Bumpy air is not uncommon on aircraft journeys, and while cases of rough conditions appear to be increasing, they are remained quite uncommon.

Research indicates that there are approximately thousands of instances of severe-or-greater turbulence every year, out of a sum of in excess of 35 million flights that are conducted around the world.

Severe turbulence is described as when the vertical motions of a plane going through unstable air generate in excess of 1.5g-force on your body - a strong enough force to propel you from your seat if you weren't wearing a restraint.

As a changing climate shifts atmospheric conditions, specialists caution that commercial aviation could become bumpier: shifts in temperature and altered air currents in the upper atmosphere are projected to boost the frequency and intensity of dangerous in-flight bumps.
